See the three trips
The trips

Three days out, each honest about itself.

The same three trips all season, in terrain we know down to individual rocks. Every price includes gear, lunch, photos, and the shuttle from our lot.

Sea kayaks entering a sunlit sea cave on turquoise water

Sea Cave Kayak

$95 /person
  • Level 2 Honest moderate
  • Half day · 4 hours on the water
  • Max 6 guests · ages 12 and up

Into the Lantern Caves at slack tide, when the light comes through the roof. For anyone who can paddle steadily an hour at a stretch. Your shoulders will notice; that's the trip working.

Hands on warm granite on the Ridgeline Traverse scramble

The Ridgeline Traverse

$165 /person
  • Level 3 A big day
  • Full day · 9 hours, dawn start
  • Max 4 guests · ages 16 and up

Our namesake: nine miles along the crest, sea on one side, icefield on the other. For people who train most weeks. If that's not you yet, the canyon will treat you better.

A family walking through a softly lit slot canyon

Family Canyon Walk

$55 /person
  • Level 1 Gentle
  • 3 hours · morning or afternoon
  • Max 6 guests · kids from age 8

Tallow Canyon in soft bounced light, with time to touch everything. The trip for mixed groups: grandparents, eight-year-olds, the friend who swears they're not outdoorsy.

The honesty scale

What "moderate" actually means.

Every guide service calls everything moderate. We would rather you book the right trip than need a refund, so here is our scale in plain fitness terms.

Gentle

You walk sometimes. That is the whole requirement: three miles on good ground, no scrambling, stops whenever someone finds a lizard.

Family Canyon Walk

Honest moderate

You could do a five-mile hike or an hour of steady swimming without needing tomorrow off. Sustained effort with breaks, paced to the slowest paddler, on purpose.

Sea Cave Kayak

A big day

Nine miles, 3,100 feet of climbing, a short stretch with your hands on rock. Exercise most weeks and you'll finish tired and grinning. If you don't, this trip will not love you back, and we'll say so when you book.

The Ridgeline Traverse

Between levels? Email us a few lines about your last month of exercise. We'll tell you straight, even when the answer is "not this one yet."

Every trip includes

Show up with shoes and a water bottle.

All the gear

Boats, paddles, PFDs, poles, helmets where the terrain asks. Fitted at the lot, nothing smelling of the last person.

A real lunch

Packed that morning by the Kelder Cove bakery. Half days get pastries and Cole's tailgate coffee, which reviews mention more than the caves.

The photos

Your guide carries a camera so you don't have to. The album lands in your inbox that evening, free, no watermarked upsell.

Transport

Park once at our lot on Slipway Road. We shuttle you out and deliver you back to your car, tired, on time.

Your guides

Two of us. You get names, not a roster.

Mara Voss, mountain guide, smiling with an alpine ridge behind her

Mara Voss

AMGA SPI · Wilderness First Responder

Nineteen seasons in the Vardens, eleven guiding. She has turned a group around two hundred feet below the crest, twice, and will happily tell you why both calls were right. She is who you want beside your nervous partner.

Coffee poured at the trailhead tailgate, Cole's usual post

Cole Brandt

AMGA SPI · Wilderness First Responder

Fifteen years of sea kayaking; reads swell the way you read a bus timetable. Pictured doing what he actually does at 6 a.m., which is making your coffee. He would not stand still for a portrait and we respect that.

Safety, plainly

The boring parts, said out loud.

Ratios

Six guests is the ceiling, four on the Traverse. On the water and on Level 3 terrain both of us come, a ratio of three to one when it matters most. We know everyone's name by the first snack stop.

The weather call

If we cancel, you get every dollar back. Every time.

We make the call by 7 p.m. the night before, by phone, not a buried email. Full refund, not a credit, no rebooking pressure. We would rather eat the day than sell you a bad one.

What we carry

Full wilderness med kits, a satellite communicator on every trip, spare layers in your size, a rope on the Traverse, and more chocolate than is strictly professional.

The season

April to October, in one glance.

In words: the canyon runs April through October, the kayak May through September while the sea behaves, and the Traverse July through October, once the snow lets go of the crest. November to March we sharpen tools, answer email fast, and ski.

Private trips

Your own day, at your own pace.

Any of the three trips, just your group, from $540 for up to six. A slower canyon for a grandparent, a photography-paced paddle, a proposal on the ridgeline (we have held the ring twice, zero drops). Tell us the occasion and we'll build the day around it.

Book a trip

Booking is an email, on purpose.

Tell us the trip, the date, how many of you, and anything we should know: knees, nerves, an eight-year-old. You'll hear back within a day with a confirmation, a packing list, and the meeting time.

trips@traverse.example

Phone people welcome too: (555) 555-0147, most reliably 4 to 7 p.m.

How fit do I need to be?

See the honesty scale above; it exists for this question. Unsure? Email your last month of exercise and we'll match you to a level without flattery.

Can we bring the kids?

From age 8 on the canyon walk, 12 on the kayak, 16 on the Traverse. Kids are usually our best-behaved paddlers; it's the fathers who race.

What if it rains?

Drizzle is fine and honestly flattering to the canyon. Wind, surf, and lightning are not, and then the weather call kicks in: we cancel, you get every dollar back.

What should I wear?

Layers, nothing cotton next to your skin, shoes with real tread. The packing list comes with your confirmation, and we carry spares of what people forget.
